New World is an upcoming title from indie studio, R2 Games. It’s a multiplayer online RPG where players control their own destiny by building and customizing the world. The game originally started as a single player experience before transitioning into its current form that allows for PvP between players on servers of their choosing. With these changes in mind, company leadership has been forced to address whether or not they will provide client-side authority for those who want it, which could be serious cause for concern among some gamers already weary with how New World handles real life money purchases and item ownership across servers
The “true sandbox mmo” is a type of game that allows players to do whatever they want without the fear of getting banned. It’s a new world where players can be as aggressive as they want.
With the plethora of faults that players have discovered in New World over the past month, there have been many assumptions about how the game manages server/client authority, leading to a slew of armchair developers claiming to know how the game’s backend works and how issues should be resolved. In response, one of the developers gave a detailed description of how the game manages data transmission from the user to the server, thereby dispelling the popular belief that New World is client authoritative.
“In terms of simulation, New World is totally server-based. At a high level, the concept is as follows: clients provide controller inputs to the server, which examines the input for restrictions that would invalidate it before using it as an input to a character (‘actor’ is our internal name) in server memory if it is approved. The physics and game rules are then executed (completely on the server), and the results are sent to the original client. The server will then select the result, which will be drawn by the clients.”
The essay also goes into a technical dive into how the game’s server/client authority works, as well as a few explanations for how bugs function in the game. It’s a good read for anyone who want to learn more about how New World architecture works.
In other developments, there’s a growing push among players to build PvP-only servers, with one user claiming that people are recognizing the absence of PvE content in New World. EU users have even formed an unauthorized open PvP server to provide a feeling of excitement to the game’s open world activities.
